About
Inspired by the President Obama's campaign that sought out our opinions and needs on educators, small groups began meeting to respond to then Senator Obama's request in 2007. We gathered in each others' living rooms or met in coffee shops and talked about the issues facing educators, students, society as a whole and more. Many of us had met for the first time. We came up with a list of priorities and findings along with proposed solutions. These results of these meetings became part of the Democratic Party's Plank and was published along with many other states comments in August 2008.
After the end of the 2008 presidential campaign, we resolved to take an active role in our respective communities but realized we needed to formalize a way of accomplishing our goals. We realized the key was in the dialogs we were hosting at the community level. The dialogs also emphasized that each neighborhood/community's needs are different.
With so many issues facing education and needs varying from one community to the next, we designed a core template of a series of dialogs and launched our first series January through February 2010. The City of Hartford, CT was chosen as the first community to launch our series. Working together with Hartford Public Library, various community groups, and an amazing group of parents and students, Education 2010 was born and took flight. Since then, we have participated in activities across Connecticut, New York and Zimbabwe.
A Special Note about Zimbabwe | The Zimbabwe Project began by sending gently used and new books to Zimbabwe. The project was expanded into an exchange ideas through online forums with teachers and students and other social media outlets. We are saddened to share that HIV-Aids, which is at an epidemic level in Zimbabwe, has claimed the lives of the teachers and students who lead the program from Zimbabwe. We will forever hold them in our hearts and prayers.
